Reflection Routine

The Teacher Takeaway Podcast team use a reflective routine called Start, Repeat, Delete. This routine is perfect for examining your practice, breaking down what you will keep, what you will cease and what you will introduce. It is also a great way to set goals for the upcoming school term.

The routine is comprised of 4 phases:
  1. Identify the successes and challenges
  2. Start something new
  3. Repeat something that's working well
  4. Delete something that isn't serving you
Phase 1: Identify Successes and Challenges
Begin by listing down the success and challenges from the last week, term, semester, year etc. Use the questioning prompts to guide your reflection:
  • What worked well for you? What makes you say that?
  • What wins did you have that surprised you? Why might that be?
  • What challenges did you face?
  • What made these challenges?

Phase 2: Start Something New
Think about something new you will begin doing or adding to your practice. Use the questioning prompts to guide your reflection:
  • What new practices, approaches or resources will you add to your classroom or to your leadership?
  • What steps are required for implementation?
  • How will you know it has been successful or impactful?

Phase 3: Repeat Something That's Working Well
Think about something that has worked well for you that you want to continue to do moving forward. Use the questioning prompts to guide your reflection:
  • What practice, approach or resource is working well for you, that you will continue to use in your classroom or leadership practice?
  • What do you think makes this work well?
  • What impact is it having on your students and/ or staff?

Phase 4: Delete Something That's Not Serving You
Think about something that is not working for you and is no longer serving it's purpose. Use the questioning prompts to guide your reflection:
  • What hasn't been working well for you or is no longer serving it's purpose?
  • Why do you think this might be?
  • What do you hope to notice from removing this from your classroom or leadership practice?

There’s always a lot that we can try and focus on, but these 4 phases help keep the workload manageable and goals achievable.  What will you Start, Repeat, Delete in the new school year?
